Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India are increasingly hiring senior executives from peer companies rather than IT services firms, reflecting a preference for innovative work experience and domain knowledge, according to a report cited by Mint. The trend is driven by GCCs’ growing focus on innovation and transformation, rather than transactional services.

The report by Xpheno, a Pune-based staffing firm, found that 36% of executives with over eight years of experience hired by GCCs in the year ended March 2025 came from rival companies, up from 28% in the year ended March 2023. In contrast, the share of hires from IT services firms declined from 50% to 40% during the same period.

The shift is attributed to GCCs’ need for talent with experience in innovative work, rather than just transactional services. “GCCs want talent that has been involved in innovative work in the past”, said Kamal Karanth, co-founder of Xpheno. “Hiring leaders from peer GCCs is a culturally better fit and gets them to a quicker operational speed”.

The trend comes as India’s GCC sector continues to grow, with the number of global roles expected to jump almost fivefold in the next five years to 30,000, according to Nasscom. The sector already employs 1.35 million people in India’s top 120 GCCs, with a total workforce of 1.9 million across 1,950 GCCs.

The report’s findings highlight the evolving nature of GCCs in India, as they move beyond traditional IT services to drive innovation and transformation for their parent companies.
